Wales assistant coach starred at Furman in the mid-’80s

Clint Dempsey is typically the first person who comes to mind when thinking of Furman University’s notable soccer alumni, but a former midfielder who played for the Paladins in the mid-’80s and the team he coaches for is on the cusp of a European Championship.

Osian Roberts is the assistant manager of the Welsh team that will play Portugal in a semifinal match tomorrow. Roberts played at Furman from 1985-1988 and was named a second-team all-American in 1986 and 1988.  The native of Anglesey, Wales, was the school’s first ever All-American and first-ever conference player of the year, an award he won in 1986 and 1988.

After his playing career ended, Roberts stayed stateside and played in the American Professional Soccer League for the New Mexico Chillies before returning to Wales in the early ’90s and beginning a coaching journey that landed him on the national team staff in 2015.
