USL newcomers prevail in derbies with local colleges in Louisville and Tulsa


Two of USL’s newest teams did battle with their local colleges on Wednesday and both friendlies ended up shutouts for the professionals.

Louisville City FC got the better of Louisville with a 3-0 win at Cardinal Park in the Derby City. Magnuss Rasmussen opened the scoring in the first half with an assist from Kadeem Dacres when he took advantage of U of L goalkeeper Theo Jamilloux falling down and Matthew Fondy made it 2-0 Louisville City with a goal three minutes later in the 39th minute.

Louisville City played most of the second half down a man, but scored a third goal in the 76th minute when Fondy found the head of a trialist.

Article311The Roughnecks scored a goal in each half to beat the University of Tulsa 2-0 in their derby.

A couple trialists linked up for the first half goal – Adam Black delivering a cross that found the head of Jimmy Nealis for the eventual winner.

Forward Andy Lorei added a second goal for the Roughnecks in the second half and goalkeeper Zac Lubin helped preserve a clean sheet and was named man of the match by the Tulsa Roustabouts.

The Golden Hurricane will get another crack at their local pro club on March 21 at ONEOK Field in downtown Tulsa.

Louisville will have an even tougher task when they visit Columbus Crew on March 29 before returning home to host Akron.
