UNC Charlotte tops Independence in friendly

Friendlies

Malcolm Stewart and Kyle Parker scored to lead UNC Charlotte to a 2-1 victory over their local USL club Charlotte Independence in a friendly match.

Parker, a junior forward, led the 49ers in scoring in the fall with 9 goals and 7 assists. Stewart, a freshman defender, didn’t score in only two substitute appearances in his first season in Charlotte. The Jamaica native was on the Jamaica U-20 roster for the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship in January.

Caleb Calvert gave the Independence the lead in the first half, but the defending Conference USA champions answered with an equalizer in the second half and a late winner.

Wins over USL competition have been rare for college programs this spring. UCLA did manage a victory over LA Galaxy II on Monday and Cornell held Rochester Rhinos to a scoreless draw on Sunday.

The 49ers had a scoreless draw in their first spring game against Elon on Saturday. They host Furman this Saturday at 6 p.m.
