Stanford assistant John Smith named Cornell head coach

A Stanford assistant who helped guide the Cardinal to their first ever national championship has been named the new head coach of Cornell.

John Smith was with the Cardinal for four seasons and was a head coach at Incarnate Word for six years when the program was still in Division II. His first coaching job was with Cal State Bakersfield.

The Manchester, England native played for Wigan and Oldham FC before coming to the states to play at Rollins College. In 1997, he became the first foreign player drafted in Major League Soccer when he was selected 13th overall by the Columbus Crew.

Smith replaces Jaro Zawislan, who coached the Big Read from 2009 to 2015.
