SMU open spring slate with 3-1 win over Austin Aztex

Stanton Garcia nearly matched his fall season scoring output in the first half of SMU’s Saturday afternoon friendly with Austin Aztex, scoring a pair of goals in a 3-1 victory for the Mustangs.

The sophomore midfielder who scored three goals and had three assists for the Mustangs in the fall opened his spring exhibition season account in the third minute, scoring on a through ball from Mauro Cichero.

Thirteen minutes later Garcia and Cichero were credited with assists setting up the game-winner by junior forward Idrissa Camara, a Colorado Rapids Academy alum, and Garcia added a third goal with a diving header in the 20th minute.

Mozzi Gyorio spoiled the clean sheet for the SMU defense in the 87th minute with a tap-in goal after Sainey Touray collided with the SMU goalkeeper.

The win was the first for a college program over a professional side of the spring season after four losses – Georgetown, South Florida and UC Irvine all lost to MLS teams and UC Santa Barbara lost to Sacramento. Cal State Fullerton has played LA Galaxy and Ocean City Blues, but scores weren’t announced from either match.

SMU finished the 2014 season with a 10-6-2 record, losing to Tulsa in the American Athletic conference semifinals. They take on another USL side next week as Arizona United come to town Feb. 26 and will face an FC Dallas reserve side on March 23.
