SIU Edwardsville falls to St. Louis FC in first game with Sanchez at the helm
Junior midfielder Jabari Danzy put SIU Edwardsville on the board in the 23rd minute, but the Cougars couldn’t get the goal to hold up in a 2-1 loss to USL newcomer Saint Louis FC in Mario Sanchez’s coaching debut.
Danzy chipped the Saint Louis goalkeeper after receiving a pass from freshman TC Hull to open the scoring.
But the lead didn’t last long.
Edi Buro found an equalizer for the visitors in the 27th minute and Bryan Gaul goal scored the winner in the 89th minute on a snowy Saturday afternoon at Korte Stadium in Edwardsville.
Sanchez, a former Louisville assistant, was hired after the close of the fall season to take over a Cougar program that saw two of its players drafted into Major League Soccer – defender Matt Polster went 7th to the Chicago Fire and forward Christian Volesky was drafted by the Portland Timbers.
“The guys showed themselves really well,” Sanchez said in an interview posted on YouTube. “To give up the goal last minute hurts but it’s good for them. I think it gives them confidence that they can play at the next level but also they need to realize they have to finish games out. It’s a lesson that will serve us well moving forward.”
