Louisville, North Carolina lead the way with players in USL

AlumniUSL

North Carolina and Louisville have more alumni and future players on USL rosters to start the season than any other college.

While the numbers are always in flux as teams make roster changes and additions, Louisville has 12 and North Carolina has 11 former and future players on rosters for the third division league heading into the first week of the season.

Louisville has Real Monarchs teammates Colin Rolfe, Andrew Brody (pictured above) and Ricardo Velazco, FC Cincinnati teammates Kenney Walker and Austin Berry, Harrisburg City Islanders rookie Shane Campbell, Louisville City FC midfielder Paolo DelPiccolo, Saint Louis FC defender Mitchell Lurie, San Antonio FC teammates Greg Cochrane and Manolo Sanchez, Arizona United SC defender Brock Granger  and commit Jake Gelnovatch, a Richmond Kickers Academy goalkeeper.

North Carolina has Charlotte Independence midfielder Enzo Martinez, City Islanders defender Darvin Ebanks, Louisville City FC goalkeeper Scott Goodwin, Pittsburgh Riverhounds forward Ryan Dodson, San Antonio FC teammates Danny Garcia and Stephen McCarthy, Seattle Sounders FC 2 teammates Michael Farfan and Andy Craven (both are also on the first team roster) and Richmond Kickers teammates Michael Callahan, Eli Garner and Drew Romig, an Academy goalkeeper who has committed to North Carolina.

California, South Florida and Wake Forest are next in line with nine players each, followed by Clemson, Saint Louis and Washington with eight and St. John’s with seven.

Missing from the top half of this list are UCLA and Akron, which typically dominate the list of former players in Major League Soccer. A total of 212 schools are represented on the list. There are 29 Division II schools, 24 junior colleges, 16 NAIA schools and seven Division III schools. That leaves 136 Division 1 schools.

The numbers include players playing in USL as amateur academy players who have made college commitments.
