Creighton soccer team spending two weeks in Europe

The Creighton men’s soccer team is getting an early start on the preseason for the next two weeks in Germany and Austria.

The Big East squad was scheduled to arrive in Munich, Germany today and are slated to play their first friendly on July 2 against 2. Bundesliga club 1860 Munich.

Other games scheduled include a July 6 match with Austrian Bundesliga club Red Bull Salzburg in Austria, a match against 2. Bundesliga club SC Freiburg (former Maryland goalkeeper Zack Steffen’s club) back in Germany on July 8 and a match against 2. Bundesliga club SC Karlsruhe before returning to the states on July 13.

The Blue Jays have three Germany natives on their roster: senior defender/midfielder Vincent Keller is from Freiburg, junior midfielder/forward Fabian Herbers is from Ahaus and senior midfielder/forward Timo Pitter is from Oberschwarzach.

Creighton returns eight starters from a team that won the regular season Big East title in 2014 with a 7-1-1 conference record and a 16-3-3 mark. Their season ended in the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament when UMBC advanced on penalties.
