Coastal Carolina tops Charleston Battery in friendly

Coastal Carolina picked up a hard fought victory over a Charleston Battery side featuring three former Chants in their lineup on Wednesday.

Midfielder Martin Melchor put the Chants up in the first of three 35-minute periods and a rebound off a corner that was smashed home by an unnamed Coastal Carolina player put the perennial Big South power out in front 2-0.

The Battery cut the lead in half when Coastal alum Ricky Garbanzo connected with Taylor Mueller making a near-post run off a corner kick. Garbanzo was joined in the game by fellow alums Colin Marz and Tobenna Uzo playing against their alma mater. Battery midfielder Justin Portillo, another Coastal alumnus, didn’t play as a precaution for a knock picked up in training.

In addition to trialists, the Battery’s lineup featured a pair of U.S. U17 residency and Georgia United players, Andrew Carleton and Christopher Goslin.
