Amherst and Loras will face off for DIII championship

Division III

Jonah Jacke scored the only goal of the night in the 39th minute to lift Loras past Calvin and set up a Division III title game with Amherst, which advanced past Oneonta on penalties earlier in the evening Friday.

Oneonta (19-3-2) and Amherst (17-1-2) continued their stingy defense in the first game – neither team had conceded a goal in the tournament – and ended up having to decide things with a penalty shootout.

Amherst senior goalkeeper Thomas Bull made a save on Oneonta’s first attempt and converted a kick of his own to lead the Lord Jeffs to their first ever title game appearance. Amherst took an early 2-0 lead in the shootout when a second Oneonta shooter pushed his attempt wide and held on to win 4-3.

Senior Milton Rico’s penalty sealed it.

Loras’ win put not only the men’s soccer team into their first title game, but also the first title game for any team from the Iowa college. The semifinal win was the first for the Duhawks (18-4-1) in five tries – they lost in the semis in 2007, 2008, 2012 and 2013. The semifinal loss was the first for Calvin (24-1-1), which lost in the title game in their only other final four appearances in 2009 and 2011.
