Akron men’s soccer team traveling to Brazil

The Akron Zips will be in Brazil from May 21-30 for a cultural and training experience in the 2014 World Cup host country.

“With the history and tradition of Brazilian soccer there is no better place to take a team to play than Brazil,” third-year Akron head coach Jared Embick said in a release about the trip on the Akron Zips website.

Akron is returning nine starters and 24 players from a team that went 13-6-2, won the Mid-American Conference regular season and tournament titles and were knocked out of the first round of the NCAA tournament on penalty kicks by Ohio State. The nucleus of those returning starters includes first-team conference performers Adam Najem, Jake Fenlason and Andrew Souders.

While in Brazil, the Zips will train and play friendlies against reserve squads for Fluminense, Sao Paulo, Corinthians and Flamengo. For rising junior Victor Souto, a Sao Paulo native, the trip will be a homecoming. Fellow Brazilian Dener Dos Santos is unable to make the trip because of a broken leg sustained in training.

Updates of the trip will be posted on GoZips.com.
