Akron star midfielder Adam Najem is returning to the team this fall after exploring professional options in the offseason, according to a release from the team.

The North Jersey native who spent time in the New York Red Bulls Academy before college led the Zips to the College Cup last season with 10 goals and 11 assists while earning second-team All-American honors.

He’s spent time this summer in the PDL with Michigan Bucks, registering four assists in five games.

“We are thrilled Adam has decided to come back for his senior year,” said University of Akron head men’s soccer coach Jared Embick said in a news release. “He is important to this team on and off the field. On the field, our play goes through him. He is the playmaker and he controls the rhythm of the game for our attack. Off the field, he is a tremendous student-athlete and is a leader. He is one of our two captains and does a great job pushing this group to reach their potential.”

Najem has 28 goals and 24 assists in 67 career games with Akron.
